Briefs: Schram, Wiercioch win in Classic

Connor Schram and Cody Wiercioch, both seniors at Canon-McMillan High School, each won their bouts in the USA Dream Team Classic at Elmhurst College in Chicago Saturday night.

The two wins helped Team USA defeat Team Illinois, 27-16.

Schram took a 7-4 decision from Gordon Northrup, a state champion and four-time state placewinner from Harlem High School.

Wiercioch took a 7-2 decision from Dan Rowland, a state runner-up from Willowbrook High School.

Schram and Wiercioch each won PIAA gold medals in the Class AAA championships in Hershey in March.

Waynesburg University scored the first run but Thomas More answered with the next eight to take an 8-1 victory in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Sunday.

The Saints are 22-8 overall and 12-5 in conference. Waynesburg is 14-15, 7-10 in conference.

• Washington & Jefferson improved to 12-0 at Ross Memorial Park this spring after defeating Saint Vincent 8-4 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference baseball action.

Junior right-hander Brian O’Neill struck out six during eight innings to raise his record to 5-1. O’Neill scattered five hits, while surrendering two earned runs.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy clinched the fourth and final spot in the upcoming Landmark Conference Men’s Lacrosse Tournament after holding off Washington & Jefferson 9-6 on Senior Day at Alexandre Stadium.

The Mariners (8-6, 3-2) will play top-seeded Goucher in one of two semifinals May 1. The Presidents (4-8, 0-5) will now compete in the first Presidents’ Athletic Conference Invitational. The PAC Invitational semifinals begin May 1, too.
