South Fayette guard Evan Bonnaure committed yesterday to play basketball at La Roche College in Pittsburgh. Bonnaure became an elite scorer as a season, putting up 16.4 points, 2.8 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game for a team that reached the WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals and PIAA playoffs.
Three Pittsburgh football players have been suspended by coach Paul Chryst after their house was raided following a drug sting.
Police say junior tight end Drew Carswell, defensive tackle Khaynin Mosley-Smith and junior defensive back Eric Williams each will be charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. The players’ home was raided early Friday morning.
Police say an undercover agent purchased several bags of heroin from another man, Darnell Reed-Young, at the players’ residence. Officers then obtained a search warrant and discovered drug packaging materials in several rooms and a scale with white residue in Carswell’s bedroom.
All three players will be charged by summons. Chryst says the team “has strict and clear standards regarding these types of behaviors” and their actions do not represent the standards of the program or university.
First baseman Bobby Hartman, third baseman Tim Chilcote and right fielder Adam Horning had two hits apiece and Horning drove in four runs to power Waynesburg past Westminster, 10-4, in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at Consol Energy Park. Anthony Longo was the winning pitcher after allowing four runs and nine hits over seven innings, with 1 walk and no strikeouts. Waynesburg improved to 8-11 in the PAC, 17-16 overall.
Freshman Alex Sagl earned a pair of victories and junior right fielder Stephani Ellis tallied a combined six RBI on Friday afternoon, as the seventh-ranked California University softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Slippery Rock at Lilley Field in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, winning 11-2 and 6-3.
With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 30-2 overall behind a 13-1 mark in league play. Cal U has now reached the 30-win mark in four of the last five seasons
California University’s Aaron Dinzeo ran a personal-best time and placed fifth overall in the 10,000-meter run at the Penn Relays late Thursday night. Dinzeo, who holds the seventh-fastest time in the event this year in NCAA Division I, crossed the finish line with a time of 29 minutes, 24.01 seconds.
On the women’s side, California University senior Erin Kling broke her school record in the 10,000, and the 400 and 1,600 relays ran season-best times at the Penn Relays yesterday. Kling was 18th with a time of 36:48.83. The 1,600 team of Sandy Estep, Imani Shell, Allison Hall and Jordyn Reagan was 58th in 3:58.19. And the 400 group of Bria Jay, Danae Burgwin, Monique Sims and Reagan was 55th in 49.01 seconds.
Saint Vincent scored five times during an 11-minute span in the second half to earn a 10-9 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Tournament semifinal victory over Washington & Jefferson Friday night at Thiel’s Alumni Stadium.
The inaugural Presidents’ Athletic Tournament features Saint Vincent (11-4) and the host Tomcats in the championship game Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Bearcats avenged a 15-11 loss to W&J Wednesday night.
Brittany Fradkin netted three goals in her final match as a President to finish with 182 career goals and 210 points (both third in school history). Megan Kelly also scored three in her final NCAA match, while Kelsey Kraus closed her career with a three-point effort (two goals, one assist). Freshman midfielder Diana Harvey scored W&J’s (4-10) other goal and also dished out one assist.
Jeff Rogers has stepped down as head coach of the Thomas More men’s basketball team, resigning to take the same position at Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga. Rogers guided the Saints to the 2010 Presidents’ Athletic Conference regular season title and three appearances in the PAC Tournament final.
