Wild Things, Sanford shut down Joliet

2 min read

Shawn Sanford shut down Joliet over eight innings and Quincy Latimore had a key home run in the seventh to power the Wild Things to a 6-1 victory in front of 2,036 fans at Consol Energy Park Thursday.

The win took some of the sting out of Wednesday’s 9-5 loss in 10 innings to the Slammers in a game delayed more than hour by rain.

Sanford allowed only five hits and struck out three in raising his record to 8-4. He dropped his ERA to 2.87.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when the Wild Things struck for two runs. C.J. Beatty and Latimore had back-to-back singles and Stewart Ijames drove in Beatty with a single. Matt Mirabal smacked a double that scored Ijames.

In the bottom of the seventh, Shain Stoner singled, Scott Kalamar was hit by a pitch and Beatty grounded into a fielder’s choice that left two men on. Latimore cleared the bases with a three-run home run, his fifth of the season.

Washington stretched the lead to 6-0 when A.J. Nunziato walked and came around to score on a wild pitch.

Joliet scored a run in the ninth on a single by Mike Wing.

In Wednesday’s game, Joliet scored the last six runs of the game, including four in the 10th inning. Wing had three hits and two RBI and Nick Akins hit his 17th home run and drove in three runs.

Ijames hit his 11th and 12th home runs and drove in four runs for the Wild Things.
