Steelers’ Burress to undergo surgery

Plaxico Burress was hoping a full training camp would help make him a bigger part of the Steelers offense than he was after signing with the team late last season.
Instead, his career is likely over thanks to a training camp injury.
Burress suffered a torn rotator cuff after slamming to the turf on his right elbow after leaping for a pass and will undergo surgery Monday, the day of his 36th birthday.
The Steelers also got bad news on injured tight end Matt Spaeth, who suffered a Lis Franc sprain and will be out eight to 10 weeks.
Burress was injured late during a team drill Thursday, leaving the field on a cart. He later had the arm in a sling.
The Steelers’ No. 1 pick in the 2000 draft, Burress played with the Steelers through 2004, then re-signed last November. He appeared in three games in 2012, catching three passes for 42 yards and one touchdown.
Burress played in two AFC championship games with the Steelers and then won a Super Bowl with the New York Giants in 2008. But he ran afoul of the law after the Super Bowl victory when he shot himself in the leg with an unregistered handgun in a New York nighclub.
Burress missed three seasons while serving a jail term, returning to the NFL with the Jets in 2011.
Burress has 553 career receptions for 8,499 yards and 64 touchdowns.
