Wild Things trade pitcher Sanford

2 min read

The Wild Things made one trade at the Frontier League transactions deadline Monday, sending right-handed starting pitcher Shawn Sanford to the Schaumburg Boomers in exchange for a player to be named.

“We knew how much Shawn wanted to make the playoffs, and when Schaumburg called, it became a win-win for both clubs,” Washington manager Bart Zeller said. “Shawn wanted to move to a higher league (next year), and we feel we strengthened our club for next season. We wish him well.”

Schaumburg enters tonight’s play in first place in the West Division, three games ahead of Gateway, which begins a series against the Wild Things at Consol Energy Park.

Sanford, from Tampa, Fla., had been the Wild Things’ most effective starting pitcher during his only season in Washington. He has an 8-5 record and 3.01 ERA in 18 games (16 starts). He leads the Wild Things in wins and strikeouts (88) and is second with 113 1/3 innings pitched.

Sanford was signed by the Wild Things this spring after four seasons in the San Francisco Giants’ system. A standout at South Florida University, Sanford was the Pitcher of the Year in the Class A South Atlantic League in 2011 and was a nonroster invitee to the Giants’ major-league spring training in 2012.
