Marte placed on 15-day DL
The Pittsburgh Pirates placed leadoff hitter Starling Marte on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a bruised right hand.
Marte was injured Aug. 18 when he was thrown out trying to steal third base in the eighth inning of Pittsburgh’s 4-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Marte’s right hand was stepped on during the play. He remained in the game but hasn’t played since.
Before getting hurt Marte was batting .282 with 11 home runs and 33 RBI. He is third in the NL with 35 stolen bases.
Andrew Lambo was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis to replace Marte.
Boston 4, L.A. Dodgers 2: Jon Lester pitched three-hit ball into the eighth inning, Jonny Gomes’ three-run homer capped a four-run first, and the Boston Red Sox beat Los Angeles 4-2, snapping the Dodgers’ four-game winning streak.
The Red Sox began the day percentage points behind Tampa Bay for first in the AL East. They won at Dodger Stadium for the first time in five games dating to their first visit in 2002, when they were swept in three games. Lester (12-7) gave up one run in 7 1/3 innings, struck out six and walked four.
Oakland 2, Baltimore 1: Coco Crisp hit a tiebreaking home run leading off the ninth inning and Jarrod Parker earned his eighth straight win as the Oakland Athletics beat the Baltimore Orioles 2-1.
After Parker and Chris Tillman waged a magnificent pitching duel for eight innings, Crisp connected on a 3-1 pitch from Darren O’Day (5-3). It was the third home run in three games for Crisp, who had four hits on Friday night.
Detroit 3, N.Y. Mets 0: Max Scherzer outpitched Matt Harvey in their All-Star rematch, striking out 11 and hitting a stunning RBI double that sent the Detroit Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the New York Mets.
Scherzer (19-1) joined Rube Marquard in 1912 and Roger Clemens in 2001 as the only major league pitchers to win 19 of their first 20 decisions in a season.
Andy Dirks had three hits off Harvey, who gave up a career-high 13 against Detroit’s powerful lineup.
Jeter expected back Monday: New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is about ready to rejoin the team after being sidelined earlier this month by a strained right calf.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said before Saturday night’s game against Tampa Bay that barring a setback, Jeter will be back with the team Monday in Toronto.
Jeter broke his left ankle in the AL championship series in October and missed the first 91 games this year
Putz placed on DL: The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-handed reliever J.J. Putz on the 15-day DL with a dislocated right pinky finger and recalled right-hander Chaz Roe from Triple-A Reno.
Putz hurt his finger in Friday night’s 4-3 defeat to the Philadelphia Phillies. Putz is 3-1 with a 2.43 ERA in 35 games this season. Roe, a rookie reliever, pitched in five games this season for the Diamondbacks and went 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA.
Angels place Jespen on DL: The Los Angeles Angels have placed reliever Kevin Jepsen on the 15-day disabled list after he had surgery to remove his appendix.
Jepsen had surgery Saturday in Seattle. The Angels also recalled outfielder Collin Cowgill from Triple-A Salt Lake City.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said the operation will keep Jepsen sidelined for four to six weeks but added he doesn’t realistically expect Jepsen to return this season. Jepsen has appeared in 45 games for the Angels with a 1-3 record and 4.50 ERA.
Cowgill is batting .231 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 48 games with Los Angeles.
