1 min read

Alison Riske of Peters Township received a wild-card entry to the U.S. Open women’s tennis tournament that begins today at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Riske, a former PIAA champion who advanced to the third round at Wimbledon in July, will play Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria in the first round. The match will likely be played Tuesday. Riske is currently ranked 95th in the world. Pironkova is 67th.

This will be the 23-year-old Riske’s second appearance in the U.S. Open. She lost in the first round in 2011. Pironkova, 25, has played seven times in the U.S. Open and advanced to the fourth round last year before losing to Ana Ivanovic of Serbia. Pironkova also reached the fourth round at Wimbeldon this year.
