2 min read

Three local scholastic wrestling teams – Canon-McMillan in Class AAA, and Jefferson-Morgan and South Fayette in Class AA – will host doubleheaders in the WPIAL Section Team Tournament Wednesday.

Two other teams – Waynesburg in Class AAA and West Greene in Class AA – will host fifth-place matches.

The scenario for the one-day tournament is as follows: the top two teams in each of the two subsections will compete for the section title. The first-place teams in the subsection wrestling against the opposite second-place finishers in the subsections in the first round. The winners of these dual meets wrestle for the section title; the losers wrestle for third and fourth place.

The top five teams in Class AAA and Class AA qualify for the WPIAL Team Tournament, which gets under way the week of Jan. 28.

Canon-McMillan (5-0), the No. 1 team in the Observer-Reporter Team Wrestling Rankings and the No. 5-ranked team in the country by Intermat, wrestles West Allegheny; and McGuffey (3-2) takes on Hopewell (5-0) in the first-round matches in Section 4. Waynesburg (3-2) hosts Montour (3-2) in the fifth-place match.

In Section 1, Chartiers-Houston (4-1) meets Burgettstown (5-0), and South Fayette (5-0) goes against Ellwood City (3-2). Avella (2-3) hosts South Side Beaver (2-3) in the fight for fifth place.

In Section 2, Jefferson-Morgan (5-0) draws a tough first-round opponent in Mt. Pleasant (4-1), while No. 1 Yough (5-0) takes on Bentworth (4-1).

West Greene (3-2) hosts Derry (3-2) in the fifth-round match.
