Boys basketball: Monessen holds off California

California (13-2) led 28-24 at halftime before Monessen (6-9) rallied to tie the score after three quarters. Behind Huffman, who scored a game-high 33 points, California opened the five-point advantage in the fourth quarter before Monessen rallied again. The Greyhounds led 66-63 with 18 seconds remaining when Luke Doptis sealed the victory by making two free throws.

The win was the fifth for Monessen in its last six games.

Clintell Gillaspie paced the Greyhounds with 24 points and eight rebounds. Javon Brown followed with 17 points, and Justice Rawlins scored only four points but had 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Huffman scored 16 of his 33 points during the fourth quarter. Brian Fisher helped Cal forge its early lead by scoring 10 of his 16 points in the first half.
