Bucs fall in overtime to Steel Valley
C.C. Dixon made a three-pointer to tie the score with less than 30 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and finished with a game-high 26 points during Steel Valley’s 55-54 win over Chartiers-Houston in Section 4-AA.
Chartiers-Houston, which fell to 4-5, 10-7, got 21 points from Ashley Balzer and 10 apiece from Tori Foster and Addisen Knetzer, but the Bucs missed 13 of 27 attempts from the free throw line.
Chartiers-Houston could’ve moved a half-game ahead of Steel Valley (5-3, 9-6) in section play but instead stayed in fourth place, a game ahead of Fort Cherry.
Avella 54, Mapletown 19: Kenna Drazich had a game-high 13 points and Alexandria Barr and Kira Doaks added 12 apiece, as Avella cruised to a 54-19 win over Mapletown in Section 3-A.
Avella, which leads Carmichaels by a half-game, improved to 6-0, 10-6.
Madison Bogden and Rachel Buchtan had six points apiece for Mapletown (0-6, 0-13).
Bethel Park 70, Peters Township 44: Megan Marecic led Bethel Park to an easy Section 4-AAAA win with 20 points, including four three-pointers. The Black Hawks are now 9-0, 16-1 and have won 15 straight. Kaitlin Chess scored 13 points, and Samantha Simpson contributed 11.
Two players scored in double figures for Peters Township (0-8, 3-13): Cameron Morgan with 13 and Madison Kerr with 10.
McGuffey 68, Bentworth 13: Sammie Weiss had 23 points and Rachel Czulewicz added 14 during McGuffey’s 68-13 rout of Bentworth in Section 5-AA, as the Highlanders improved to 8-0, 15-1. Sammie’s older sister, Cassie, chipped in with 12 points.
Jeanna Brewer had four points for Bentworth (2-6, 5-11).
Seton-La Salle 72, Fort Cherry 31: Fort Cherry took its turn through the Seton-La Salle buzzsaw, dropping a 72-31 decision at home in Section 4-AA. Rachel Bellhy had 21 points for the Rangers, but Fort Cherry still fell to 3-5, 6-7.
Four players reached double figures for Seton-La Salle. Natalie Piaggesi had 16 points, Angela Heintz 13, Naje Gibson 11 and Katherine Hart 10.
Washington 54, Beth-Center 22: Washington jumped out to a 17-2 edge after one quarter and rolled to a 54-22 victory over Beth-Center in a Section 5-AA game.
Mya Williams led the Prexies (6-3, 9-7) with 18 points. Taja Gordon had seven points and seven steals.
Anna Bartman led B-C (1-7, 3-12) with 13 points.
California 53, Jefferson-Morgan 47: Courtnee McMasters scored a game-high 22 points and California rallied in the fourth quarter to get past Jefferson-Morgan, 53-47 in a Section 3-A game.
Natalie Baron added 17 points for the Trojans (3-2, 12-4), who outscored the Rockets (2-3, 6-9) 19-7 in the final eight minutes.
The key play came when Olivia Helmick was fouled after hitting a three-point basket. She was injured on the play so Alesha Haschets came in to make the free throw to complete a four-point play.
Kayla Yorko scored 13 points and Ally Bogden chipped in with 12 for J-M.
Belle Vernon 64, Waynesburg 17: Jessica Slagus scored 26 points to put her at 1,006 for her career during Belle Vernon’s 64-17 victory over Waynesburg in a Section 4-AAA game.
Slagus also pulled down 12 rebounds to reach 760 for her career for BV (6-2, 12-4). Kaitlyn Slagus tossed in 12 points.
Payton Lohr and Michelle Cesa each scored six points for Waynesburg (0-8, 3-14).
Charleroi 44, South Side Beaver 41: Charleroi shut out South Side Beaver, 12-0, in the second quarter on the way to a 44-41 victory in a Section 5-AA game.
Mia Woytovich scored 12 points to lead the Cougars (8-1, 13-5), who were outscored 30-26 in the second half. Rachel Ritzer added 10 points.
Sam Gibson scored a game-high 15 for the Rams (4-5, 6-11) and Sarah Androlia chipped in with 11.
West Mifflin 51, Ringgold 42: West Mifflin got off to a quick start and defeated Ringgold, 51-42, in a Section 4-AAA game.
Taylor Thomas scored a game-high 21 points for West Mifflin (6-2, 7-9), which led 17-8 after the first quarter. Marla Small added 12 points.
Eleni Radic tossed in 11 points and Shayla Crews added 10 for the Rams (4-6, 7-9).
Carmichaels 56, West Greene 50: Morgan Berardi scored a game-high 24 points and Carmichaels held off a fourth-quarter surge by West Greene to take a 56-50 victory in a Section 3-A game.
Amanda Brown and Caroline Cree each scored 12 points for the Mikes (5-1, 15-2), who led 43-29 after three quarters but were outscored 21-13 over the final eight minutes.
Madison Raber scored 23 points and Emily Courtwright chipped in with 12 for the Pioneers (1-5, 9-8).
Chartiers Valley 58, Canon-McMillan 29: Three players scored in double figures to propel Chartiers Valley to a 58-29 victory over Canon-McMillan in a Section 4-AAAA game.
Mariah Wells had the most with 16 and was followed by Kassidy O’Keefe, who threw in 12. Jenna DeVinney added 11 for the Colts (7-2, 13-4).
Olivia Lorusso paced Canon-McMillan (1-8, 6-10) with 11 points.
Trinity 57, Moon 54: Lauren Simpson and Rachel Phillis combined for 27 points to help Trinity take a 57-54 victory from Moon in Section 5-AAA.
Simpson scored 15 points and had three three-point field goals for the Hillers (3-6, 5-11), who led 46-38 after three quarters. Phillis tossed in 12 points.
Amirah Moore had a game-high 25 points for Moon (4-4, 9-9). Abby Unis scored 17.
Laurel Highlands 67, Waynesburg 44: Nick Lancaster finished with 16 points and Laurel Highlands outscored Waynesburg by 21 in the fourth quarter en route to a 67-44 win in a non-section game.
Shane Guthrie scored 14 points, and Joe Pegg added 12 for Laurel Highlands, which improved to 12-5.
Waynesburg dropped to 3-13 despite 16 points from Adam Fox and 10 from Dominick Sarra.
Chartiers Valley 79, McGuffey 30: Five players scored in double figures to help Chartiers Valley defeat McGuffey, 79-30, in a Section 5-AAA game.
Michael Bowls led the way with 18 points for the Colts (9-0, 15-1), who led 44-9 at halftime. Spencer Chasson scored 13 and Matt McConnell, Haedyn Herzer and Dom Costello each scored 11 points.
Brennan Crimm led the Highlanders (1-7, 7-10) with nine points.
