Cal beats Lock Haven, snaps streak

Four players reached double figures to help California University’s men’s basketball team surge in the second half and take an 81-67 victory from Lock Haven in PSAC game at the Convocation Center.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Vulcans.

Cal moved to 6-7 in the PSAC and 7-10 overall. Lock Haven fell to 5-11, including 3-10 in the conference.

Quentin Harding led the way for Cal with 15 points, five assists and four rebounds. Jake Jacubec tossed in 13 points and had five rebounds. Tynell Fortune and Anthony Lytle each scored 10 points.

California forced Lock Haven into 19 turnovers, 12 on steals, and converted them into 15 points. The Vulcans had only eight turnovers. That helped the Vulcans pull away after leading 34-32 at halftime.

Kasheef Festus led Lock Haven with 18 points and Wali Hepburn had 11 points and six rebounds. Andre Rivers had 10 points and four assists.

Thomas More 78, Waynesburg 68: Thomas More extended its winning streak to seven straight games with a 78-68 victory over Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game in Crestview Hills, Ky.

The Saints improved to 16-3 overall and 9-1 in the PAC while the Yellow Jackets fell to 8-12 overall and 3-8 in the conference.

DeCarlo Hayes had a team-high 16 points, Spencer Berlekamp added 13 and Brandon Housley and Chris Richard each finished with 11 points. Thomas More forced 18 turnovers and had 13 steals.

Jacob Fleegle had 16 points to pace Waynesburg’s offense. Kenny Klase had 15 points and Jason Probst 12.

Women’s Results

California 71, Lock Haven 60: California needed a strong second half in which the Vulcans outscored Lock Haven by 10 points for a 71-60 victory in a PSAC game.

Lock Haven led 32-27 at halftime but Cal outscored the Bald Eagles 44-28 over the final 20 minutes.

Emma Mahady and Stephanie Michael combined for 35 points for the Vulcans. Mahady had 18 and Michael 17. The two combined to go 9 for 9 from the free throw line and 12 for 22 from the field.

Ashley Hines had a double-double in just 22 minutes, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for Cal. It was her third double-double of the season. Irina Kukolj scored 10 points. Mahady had five of Cal’s 15 steals and Elena Antonenko led the team with seven rebounds.

Wash & Jeff 73, Thiel 67: Chelsea Apke scored 21 points and Valerie Dunlap had 17 as Washington & Jefferson defeated visiting Thiel 73-67 in a PAC game.

The win moved W&J (8-4, 13-6) into a third-place tie with Waynesburg, which lost at Thomas More.

W&J shot 42 percent from the field and made 14 of 16 free throws, which enabled the Presidents to overcome a 25-point performance by Thiel’s Kelly Muffley.

Emily Abraham scored 13 points for W&J. Kelly Barzak had 18 for Thiel (4-8, 5-14).

Thomas More 87, Waynesburg 58: Moriah Corey had a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 rebounds to help 10th-ranked Thomas More defeat Waynesburg, 87-58.

The Saints improved to 18-1, including 12-0 in the PAC, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 9-10 overall and 8-4 in the PAC.

Allison Long led the Saints with 17 points and Jill Brunson scored 10. Alexa Santamaria had nine points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes and Katie Kitchen had nine points, five assists and five rebounds.

Jessi Drayer led Waynesburg with 12 points. Brittany Spencer and Elaine Hasek had nine apiece and Gina Rievel had three steals for the Yellow Jackets, who trailed 50-26 at halftime.
