Local briefs: McKenzie receives another offer
Seth Carr of South Fayette and Dustin Conti of Jefferson-Morgan each won their weight classes in the Bedford Wrestling Tournament Saturday.
Carr decisioned Johs Brown of Claysburg-Kimmel, 6-1, in the 113-pound finals and Conti stopped Tyler Dybert of Chestnut Ridge, 7-2, in the 170-pound finals.
Brendan Howard (106) of Jefferson-Morgan and Mike Carr (126) and J.J. Walker (160) of South Fayette each finished second.
Chestnut Ridge won the team title with 213 points, Bedford was second with 191.5 and South Fayette third at 180.5.
California University won 14 events – 10 individual, four relay – over the weekend and captured the Dual Meet Challenge Invitational at Hamer Hall.
Cal’s swimming team claimed its third invitational crown of the season, totaling 711 points. Lock Haven finished second in the team standings with 509 points, followed by Mansfield (402) and Chatham (200). The Vulcans also registered dual wins against the Bald Eagles and Mountaineers over the weekend.
Kathryn Mellon won a combined four events, three individual. She won the 400 individual medley after touching the wall in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships-qualifying time of 4:44.78 seconds. Mellon also posted the victory in the 200 butterfly by over five seconds with a time of 2:13.04. The Australian junior also cruised to the win in the 500 freestyle by touching the wall in a league-qualifying time of 5:20.49.
• Four victories by seniors Jami Andrews and Patrick O’Toole highlighted a Washington & Jefferson College swimming team sweep at Hiram. The women took a 154-112 victory, and the men earned a 166-95 win.
Andrews touched first in both breaststroke events with times of 38.39 in the 50 and 1:20.69 in the 100 meters. She also won the 100 individual medley (1:13.68) and swam a leg of the 200 medley relay that posted the top time of 2:15.68.
O’Toole swept the butterfly events with victories in the 50 (28.08) and 100 (1:02.65) meters, while taking the 100 IM (1:05.05).
Washington High School running back Shai McKenzie picked up a scholarship offer from Michigan State Saturday, bringing his current total to 15.
Virginia offered Friday. Offers from Penn State, Wisconsin and West Virginia have given McKenzie quite a bit to think about recently.
The total list of scholarships, at this point, looks like this: Akron, Connecticut, Duke, Maryland, Michigan State, Penn State, Pitt, Purdue, Rutgers, Tennessee, Toledo, Virginia, West, Wisconsin and Youngstown State.
Chartiers-Houston took third place, Bentworth finished seventh and Burgettstown eighth at the Chartiers Valley Wrestling Duals.
In the placement rounds, Chartiers-Houston fell to Butler, 51-28, but defeated Hopewell, 47-27, in the third-place match.
Bentworth lost 42-39 to Upper St. Clair, then beat Burgettstown, 42-27, for seventh place. Chartiers Valley defeated Norwin, 34-29, to take first place.
