The Dallas County district attorney says he’s not surprised that Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent failed two drug tests while out on bond facing an intoxication manslaughter charge.

Brent was charged after a December car crash that killed practice squad player Jerry Brown. Court records show his bond was revoked after he tested positive twice for marijuana.

District Attorney Craig Watkins told KRLD-FM last week that it’s clear to him that Brent is struggling with addiction. Watkins says that Brent “still uses alcohol and illicit drugs,” and he wants him jailed for the crash.

Those comments drew protests from Brent’s attorney, George Milner, who on Tuesday called them inappropriate. Milner says he’ll ask a judge to force Watkins to comply with ethics rules.

Colts player arrested on gun charge: Indianapolis Colts safety Joe Lefeged was released from jail Tuesday following his weekend arrest in Washington on a gun possession charge.

Lefeged was arrested during a traffic stop after police said they found a semiautomatic pistol in the car in which he was riding. Police say they also smelled marijuana in the car and found an open bottle containing vodka and orange juice in the center console. Lefeged and another passenger were taken into custody after they tried to run from officers, and the driver got away, authorities have said.

D.C. Superior Court Magistrate Judge Frederick Sullivan ordered Lefeged released on personal recognizance after a brief hearing in which the third-year pro appeared in an orange jail jumpsuit. The decision came against the request of prosecutors, who asked to keep him behind bars as the case moves toward a possible indictment.

“This is a case involving a traffic stop, indicia of drug use, flight from police, recovery of an open container,” prosecutor Ben Schrader told the judge.

Goodell, Meyer to hold safety clinic: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer will host a safety clinic next month for about 600 mothers of youth football players.

The free event will be held Aug. 1 at the Buckeyes’ Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Participants will receive classroom instruction from health experts and on-field training from Ohio State coaches and former players.

The NFL has promoted several programs that work to improve safety in football at various levels. The league faces a federal lawsuit over concussion-related injuries by thousands of former players.
