Things fall back to .500
SAUGET, Ill. – Amalio Diaz gave up three runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Washington Wild Things dropped a 9-7 decision at Gateway, getting swept in the three-game series to drop to .500.
Washington scored three runs in the fifth and sixth innings and added one more in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead, but Jose Flores hit a two-run home run and Jon Myers doubled to push first-place Gateway (28-13) in front.
Center fielder Alex Buccilli and first baseman Stewart Ijames had two-run homers for Washington (21-21). Shortstop Shain Stoner had a solo shot among his team-high three hits.
Those three, plus second baseman C.J. Beatty and third baseman Jovan Rosa (solo homer in the seventh), finished with two hits.
Shawn Blackwell started for Washington and gave up five runs on three hits with six walks in 4 2/3 innings.
The Wild Things open a three-game set at Evansville tonight at 7:35.
