Wild Things pound the CornBelters

1 min read

Right-handed starter Shawn Sanford pitched a complete game against one of the Frontier League’s better-hitting teams, and the Washington Wild Things took a 5-1 victory from the Normal CornBelters Tuesday night.

Sanford allowed only five hits and struck out seven while moving his record to 4-0. The only run Sanford allowed was a solo home run by Matt Wright in the seventh inning.

Shain Stoner gave the Wild Things a 2-0 lead in the second inning when he laced a bases-loaded single that scored Stewart Ijames and Jim Vahalik.

The lead stretched to 5-0 in the fourth. Ijames opened the inning with a walk, then scored on Vahalik’s triple. A.J. Nunziato hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Vahalik. The final run of the inning came on three straight singles, the final one by Jovan Rosa that scored Stoner.
