Cherry rips Pens for Malkin deal
Don Cherry, the opinionated and sometimes bombastic commentator for CBC Hockey Night in Canada, said he would not want Penguins center Evgeni Malkin on his team.
While speaking to WEEI Radio in Boston, Cherry criticized the Penguins decision of giving Malkin an eight-year, $76 million contract extension last week.
“I wouldn’t give that guy anything,” Cherry said. “I think he’s a dog – a talented dog. He turns it on when he wants to turn it on. He couldn’t play for the Bruins, I’ll tell you that. You’re going to say, ‘Well, what about (Jaromir) Jagr?’ Jagr’s out there giving every ounce he’s got every time. I don’t know if he can score, but he’s giving every ounce he can. You can’t compare them.”
Malkin, center Sidney Crosby and defenseman Kris Letang were held to a combined zero points against the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference Finals.
“I wouldn’t have that Malkin. I know he’s talented, I know. But to me, he’s a loser, as far as I’m concerned,” Cherry said.
Cherry had less critical comments on Crosby. Cherry said he knows everyone is down on Crosby right now, but, “He is still the best in the world as far as I am concerned.”
Cherry is standing by his pick of the Bruins winning the Stanley Cup.
“They are going to win the Cup,” Cherry said point-blank. “I picked Boston all the way through.”
“It’s funny how the Bruins can turn it on like that,” he said, referring to the Bruins seemingly flipping a switch in the middle of Game 2 Saturday night. “It was like how it was against Toronto [in Game 7]. ‘Oh, 4-1? We’re going to turn it on for about 15 minutes.’ And that’s what they did in the overtime. If Chicago plays like they did in the overtime, it’s not going to go long.”
