PITTSBURGH – Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez was named the National League Player of the Week after hitting four homers and driving in 10 runs in last week’s games.

Alvarez, 26, went 12-for-29 (.414) winning the player of the week award for the third time in his career.

The strong week helped Alvarez improve his season batting average to .237, while he is now tied for second in the National League with 19 home runs to go along with a team-best 51 runs batted in.

After sweeping a three-game series against the Angels over the weekend – the team’s first road sweep in an interleague series since interleague play began in 1997 – the Pirates (46-30) were off on Monday as they travelled to Seattle for a series that begins today.

Pittsburgh currently sits one game behind St. Louis (47-29) in the National League Central standings.
