Cal women make NCAA tournament
The California University women’s basketball spent five days playing the waiting game, wondering if its 20-8 record was good enough to land an at-large berth to the NCAA Division II tournament.
The waiting ended late Sunday night when the Vulcans learned they were given the No. 7 seed in the eight-team Atlantic Regional and will play Friday against a familiar foe.
California will play second-seeded Edinboro (22-6) at Gannon University’s Hammermill Center. Edinboro defeated the Vulcans twice (70-51 and 60-41) during the regular season in PSAC West Division contests.
Gannon earned the region’s top seed and will play WVIAC champion Fairmont State, the eighth seed, in the first round. Defending national champion Shaw (N.C.) is the No. 3 seed and plays sixth-seed Glenville State. Fourth-seeded Indiana plays fifth-seeded Bloomsburg, the PSAC tournament champion.
Cal has wins over three of the teams in the regional. The Vulcans defeated Fairmont State (82-57), Glenville State (102-55) and went 1-2 against Gannon, beating the Golden Knights at the Convocation Center 81-73 last month.
