College baseball roundup: Cal opens PSAC West play with split
Derek Zeroski had two doubles and drove in three runs to lead California University to a 13-4 victory over Mercyhurst and a split of a PSAC West Division doubleheader Friday at Consol Energy Park.
Mercyhurst (1-1, 14-8) bounced back to win the second game, 3-1, as Lakers pitcher Ben Rawding won his 18th consecutive decision with a five-hitter.
Zeroski capped an eight-run first inning for Cal (1-1, 14-8) in the opener with a three-run double down the left-field line. G.J. Senchak was the winning pitcher, striking out eight in a complete game.
Cal scored its only run against Rawding in the fourth on an RBI-single by Carmichaels graduate Chuck Gasti. Rawding struck out eight and walked one.
• Junior right-handers Eddie Nogay and Brian O’Neill each tossed a three-hit shutout as Washington & Jefferson swept a doubleheader from Gallaudet, 1-0 in eight innings and 7-0, in Auburndale, Fla.
Nogay struck out eight and did not walk a batter over eight innings. He retired the final 10 batters he faced during his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career. The Presidents, who did not have a baserunner until two outs in the sixth, scored the winning run when Scott Liller’s two-out hit drove in Cory Bauer in the eighth.
In the second game, O’Neill struck out nine and did not issue a walk in earning his second win. He retired the final nine Gallaudet batters.
Jordan Reiner had a two-run double for W&J.
• Waynesburg used a pair of outstanding pitching performances to sweep Penn State-Behrend 3-0 and 10-3. J. Jay Paskert (Washington) recorded his first complete-game shutout with the Yellow Jackets in athe opener. Freshman Brian Resnik (Burgettstown) gave up one run over six innings in the second game.
Tim Chilcote’s two-run single in the first inning was all the support Pasket needed as he scattered eight hits and did not walk a batter.
Waynesburg (7-5) built a 10-0 lead in the nightcap. Nick Berdine and Adam Horning each homered for the Yellow Jackets. Horning’s homer was a three-run shot.
