Baseball: Presidents dealt first PAC loss
Geneva dealt Washington & Jefferson its first Presidents’ Athletic Conference loss of the season Saturday, defeating the Presidents 6-2 at 33rd Street Park in Beaver Falls.
Geneva scored three runs in the third inning, and Tanner Propst tossed three shutout innings in relief of winning pitcher starter Caleb Kilgore as the Golden Torandoes improved to 1-2 in the league and 6-9 overall.
W&J (5-1, 8-5) was held to seven hits, including two by D.J. Michalski. The Presidents stranded 10 baserunners.
• Brian Resnik pitched a four-hit complete game as Waynesburg defeated host Bethany 9-2 in the nightcap of a PAC doubleheader.
Bethany won the opener, 11-4.
Resnik did not allow an earned run and benefitted from Waynesburg’s five-run fifth inning that broke a 2-2 tie. Resnik walked one and struck out six while improving his record to 3-0.
Kyle Sasala had a two-run single in the key fifth inning. Clay Roman led the Waynesburg offense with three hits. Ben Shorthouse had a triple.
In the opener, Bethany’s Derek Miller had two doubles and drove in four runs. Roman had three hits for Waynesburg, and Nick Berdine homered and doubled.
• Mount Olive, ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II, scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and then held on for a 7-6 victory over California in a non-conference game in North Carolina.
Mount Olive (31-4), which has won nine in a row, swept the three-game series from the Vulcans.
Kyle Petty went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs for Cal (16-7) as the Vulcans built a 6-2 lead after four innings. Mount Olive scored three times in the fifth, then took the lead in the sixth.
Winning pitcher Chris Orphanos pitched four shutout innings of relief.
