FSU QB Trickett transferring to WVU

2 min read

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Former Florida State quarterback Clint Trickett has transferred to West Virginia.

Trickett was released from his Florida State scholarship last month. The junior is on target to graduate this month with a social science degree and can be eligible to play in the fall. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Trickett’s father, Rick, spent six seasons as offensive line coach at West Virginia before leaving for the same job at Florida State in 2007.

“WVU football welcomes Clint Trickett home,” West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said Wednesday. “He basically grew up in Morgantown, and I know he feels very comfortable here. He’s an excellent student and grew up around the game of football, which shows in his composure on the field. I am excited that he has decided to finish his career as a Mountaineer.”

Trickett will compete in West Virginia’s fall camp with Paul Millard and Ford Childress for the starting job left by the departed Geno Smith.

Trickett had been competing for the Seminoles’ starting job during spring practice that wrapped up in mid-April. He completed 22 of 32 passes for 259 yards during Florida State’s spring game, but redshirt freshman Jameis Winston was the star and seemed to establish himself as the front-runner to start this season.

Trickett played eight games last season as EJ Manuel’s backup and went 22 of 34 for 272 yards. In 2011, he started games against Wake Forest and Clemson. He passed for 336 yards and three touchdowns at Clemson.

“I’d like to first thank Florida State for all the things that were done for me,” Trickett said. “I’m excited now to continue my academic and athletic career at West Virginia University. Not only was it home for me, the place I grew up and the state I love, but also it’s the best fit for me athletically. I appreciate the recruitment by WVU and the other programs, which were all class acts, but it was hard for me to say no to the state and team that I grew up loving.”
