Kalsey breaks own school record

Waynesburg High School graduate Marissa Kalsey, a member of the Westminster College women’s track and field teams, won the pole vault at the Slippery Rock University Last Chance Qualifier over the weekend and broke her own school-record with a vault of 3.97 meters (13-0 3/10).

Kalsey, who broke the school’s indoor pole vault record with a 3.95 meters (13-0) effort at Nationals where she earned the distinction of All-American this past winter, moved to third in the nation with her performance and will most likely compete in the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which are May 23-25 in LaCrosse, Wis.

Senior Maria Lopez posted a 5-over 77 in the second round on Monday afternoon, as the California University women’s golf team moved into second place in the team standings at the NCAA Super Region One Championships at Joliet Country Club.

The Vulcans finished just one stroke back of the lowest score of the round at 28-over 316. Cal now ranks second at the three-day event with a 67-over 643 (327-316), moving past Ashland (325-321-646), which shot a 33-over 321 in the second round. Indianapolis (303-315-618) stretched its lead to 25 strokes after shooting a 27-over 315 on Monday.

Lopez moved into a tie for seventh overall at 14-over 158 (81-77) after opening the round tied for 14th. She shot a 2-over 38 on the front nine with a birdie on the par-four fourth and registered par on six holes on the back nine to shoot a three-over 39. Lopez has finished in the top 10 twice at the NCAA Regional Championships in her career.

• The California University men’s golf team shot a 26-over 310 Monday to tie for fifth place in the team standings after the first round of the NCAA Atlantic/East Region Championships held on the Speidel Golf Club at Oglebay Resort.

The Vulcans are only two strokes back of second place. Wilmington (Del.) jumped out to a 10-stroke lead in the first round with a 14-over 298 after featuring three of the top 10 on the leaderboard.

IUP and Charleston (W.Va.) are tied for second at 24-over 308 and Millersville is one stroke back at 25-over 309. Wilmington junior Andrew Baldo and Charleston senior Jamin Smith hold a one-stroke lead over the field after carding a 1-over 72 on Monday.

Senior Justin Newbauer shot a 5-over 76 (38-38) to finish the first round in a six-way tie for 13th. He opened the back nine with a pair of bogeys before playing 2-under over the next four holes with birdies on the par-four 13th and par-five 14th. Newbauer has competed in the NCAA Atlantic/East Region Championships all four years of his career.

California freshman outfield/pitcher Mick Fennell hit .556 (5-for-9) with three triples, a .600 on-base percentage, five RBI and five runs scored during a series with Indiana University last week and was named the PSAC West Player of the Week.

Fennell went 2-for-3 with a two-run triple and scored twice during a game 1 win Friday. In Sunday’s victory, he scored the game-winning run in extra innings after starting the rally with a one-single in the eighth.

Winning pitcher Connor Bedillion had a double and triple as Pliska’s Auto Body outlasted Marthinsen & Salvitti, 15-12, in a Washington Pony game.

Christian Lopez had a double and four RBI, while Tanner Hudak tripled and Adam Raggi doubled for Pliska’s.

Nick Herrnberger had three doubles, while Ethan Mohr and Jeff Ecker added doubles for M&S.
