High School Baseball/Softball: California tops TJ
Jake Columbus had two hits and Ronnie Baron and Brian Fisher each added RBI singles to help the California baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Thomas Jefferson in a non-section game. the win helped California improve to 15-4 on the season. Aaron Previsky doubled for the Trojans, and Louden Conte was the winning pitcher after striking out two in three innings.
Jared Carranza doubled and homered for Thomas Jefferson, which dropped to 12-8.
• Logan Bowman was 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBI to lead Jefferson-Morgan to a 12-0 win at Beth-Center in a six-inning, non-section game. Tyler Bowman, Dom Cage and Jason Dotts added doubles for Jefferson-Morgan, which improved to 10-4. Logan Bowman also was the winning pitcher. Beth-Center fell to 6-10.
• Hempfield got five runs in the fifth inning, and Canon-McMillan couldn’t claw back, despite loading the bases in the sixth and seventh innings. Jake Trainor took the loss for the Big Macs (11-7) after Kevin Forrester faced one over the minimum through the first four innings. Jared Beach added a double for Canon-McMillan.
Joe Defloria had a double and a triple for Hempfield (16-3).
• Ryan Hudec tripled, and Mitch Mathis and Tyler McElfresh doubled as Mt. Pleasant defeated McGuffey, 9-4, in a non-section baseball game.
Don Ringer picked up the win for Mt. Pleasant (9-10).
Losing pitcher Chris Keith and Preston Semple doubled for McGuffey (2-14), which committed eight errors.
• Tim Mulvey scattered five hits as OLSH topped Avella, 11-3, in a non-section game.
Joe Kocent and Don Baumgartner doubled for OLSH (17-2).
Santino Paris and Nick Kusich both doubled, while Walt Kopko took the loss for Avella (8-0).
Cassie Weiss had three hits, including a game-winning two-run single in the top of the seventh, as McGuffey edged Keystone Oaks, 4-3, in a non-section softball game.
Sarah Kleinhans doubled, while Moriah McGuire struck out eight for the Highlanders (14-5).
Amy Tripp took the loss for KO (10-5).
• Casey Hite had 10 strikeouts and Morgan Vickless and Maddie Alauzen posted two-run doubles, as the Bentworth softball team topped West Greene, 6-1, in a non-section game. The win helped the Bearcats improve to 9-8.
Bailey Bennington had seven strikeouts and tripled for the Pioneers (10-9).
• Tara Fowler, Linda Rush and Abby McCartney had two hits apiece to help Canon-McMillan to a 5-1 victory over Ambridge in a non-section game. Alayna Astuto picked up the win for the Big Macs after striking out nine and walking two. Canon-McMillan improved to 18-1.
