Softball: Vulcans roll in NCAA tournament opener

Freshman Natalya Smarra and sophomore Shelby Heyd combined for eight RBI Friday as top-seeded California University rolled to a 15-0 five-inning victory over Chowan in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament at Lilley Field.

Cal (37-4) will play West Chester, a 7-1 winner over Lock Haven, today at 10:30 a.m. Chowan fell to 26-22.

The Vulcan scored six runs in each of the first two innings. Smarra was 3-for-3 with two home runs, three runs scored and four RBI. Heyd was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer and four RBI.

Winning pitcher Alex Sagl improved her record to 19-2, allowing one hit and one walk over four innings. She struck out eight.
