W&J baseball advances to PAC finals, ties NCAA record

2 min read

Top-seeded Washington & Jefferson secured a spot in today’s championship game of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference tournament by rolling over third-seeded Thomas More, 10-1, Friday at Ross Memorial Park.

W&J, the only remaining undefeated team in the double-elimination tournament, improved its record to 29-11. The Presidents will play either Saint Vincent or Thomas More in the finals at 3 p.m. W&J last won the PAC championship in 2009.

Against Thomas More (28-13), W&J tied an NCAA Division III single-game record by hitting five sacrifice flies (by five different players). It was only the third time in D-II history that has happened, the last time in 2002.

Winning pitcher Brian O’Neill improved his record to 6-2 by allowing only one run over 6 1/3 innings. He gave up five hits and three walks, and struck out five. Jared Baird pitched 2 2/3 hitless innings of relief for his second save.

Kyle McLain went 3-for-4 and Ronny Peirish scored three runs to lead W&J, which has won 10 in a row. The Presidents led 3-1 before breaking open the game with a five-run eighth inning. Scott Liller had a two-run single in the eighth and D.J. Michalski followed with a run-scoring double.
