California eliminated at NCAA tournament
Megan Kelly’s grand slam in the fifth inning helped fourth-seeded West Chester knock off top-seeded California, 6-3, at the NCAA Division II Regional at Lilley Field Sunday.
The loss eliminates California, which finishes at 38-6, out of the NCAA tournament, while West Chester (37-19) advances to the NCAA Super Regionals next week.
Shelby Heyd hit a three-run homer for California in the fourth inning to give the Vulcans the lead, but West Chester answered with four runs in the sixth, all driven in on Kelly’s grand slam.
Devon Utterback earned the win for West Chester, allowing just two hits while striking out eight.
Haley Bashada took the loss for California, which posted its most wins in a decade.
