Another one-run loss for Wild Things; Boomers rally in 8th
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Brian McConkey’s two-run triple in the eighth inning sparked a comeback by Schaumburg as the Boomers defeated the Wild Things 6-5 Saturday night.
The Wild Things have opened the Frontier League season with a pair of one-run losses.
After losing the season opener in extra innings Friday night, Washington led 4-2 entering the eighth, but Schaumburg rallied by scoring four runs after having two outs. Chad Mozingo’s single pulled the Boomers to within 4-3, and McConkey followed with his go-ahead triple off Wild Things closer Orlando Santos (0-1). McConkey scored what became an important insurance run for Schaumburg on Sean Mahley’s single.
Washington’s Jovan Rosa (2-for-5) drove in three runs, including two on a two-run single in the third inning. Mark Samuelson’s single scored C.J. Beatty and gave the Wild Things a 4-1 lead in the top of the eighth.
The Wild Things pulled to within 6-5 when Gus Benusa led off the ninth with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Shain Stoner. Washington left the potential tying run on third base.
Wild Things starting pitcher Shawn Sanford gave up three hits and one run in five innings.
