Hilverding has strong showing at PIAA cross country

Waynesburg High School junior Sean Hilverding had a top 10-finish and the South Fayette boys team placed third at the PIAA Cross Country Championships held Saturday in Hershey.

Hilverding finished sixth in the Class AA boys race, crossing the finish line in 16:47. It was the best finish among all area runners. Hilverding also had the second-best finish among the WPIAL representatives in Class AA.

The South Fayette boys, who won the WPIAL team championship last month, placed third in the Class AA boys team standings with 122 points. Tunkhannock won the team title with 101 points and Pottsgrove (105) was second. South Fayette’s top individual finisher was Joncarlo Patton, who was 20th in 17:09.

In the Class A boys race, Washington senior D’Heaven Kelley placed 12th overall in 17:00, which was 31 seconds faster than his time at the WPIAL meet. Kelley was second among the WPIAL runners. Burgettstown’s Cody Divecchio was 42nd (17:38) and Andrew Rozsas placed 88th (18:16).

Ethan Linderman of Canon-McMillan was the top local finisher in boys Class AAA, placing 70th in 17:10. Peters Township’s Nick Wolk ran 17:39 and Trinity’s Shane Rumbaugh covered the course in 17:44.

Fort Cherry’s Erin Allison turned in a strong performance in the girls Class A race, placing 21st in 20:18. Ringgold’s Kirsten McMichael competed in Class AAA and ran 21:01.
