CALIFORNIA – Steven Wakefield’s third field goal of the game, a 22-yarder with 40 seconds remaining, gave Mercyhurst a 23-20 victory over California in a PSAC West Division game Saturday afternoon at Adamson Stadium.

Wakefield’s kick capped a seven-play, 64-yard drive that started after California tied the score at 20-20 on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Cody Schroeder to Mike Williams with 3:06 to play.

California (4-3, 6-4) never led in the game. The Vulcans settled for two short field goals (26 and 24 yards) by Cody Nuzzo in the first half and tied the score at 13-13 in the third quarter when Trey Johnson returned a deflected punt 13 yards for a touchdown.

Mercyhurst (4-3, 6-4) answered Johnson’s touchdown with a 16-play, 86-yard drive that was capped by Richie Sanders’ one-yard plunge that gave the Lakers a 20-13 lead with 4:09 remaining. It took Cal only 63 seconds tie the score on the Schroeder-to-Williams pass.

Schroeder completed 16 of 32 passes for 190 yards, but he was intercepted three times.

Adam Jones rushed for 154 yards on 27 carries for Mercyhurst, which gained 198 yards on the ground.

Ringgold graduate Derrick Fiore led Cal with 61 rushing yards on 13 carries.
