Wizar shot in OT sinks W&J
Alec Wizar hit a three-point field goal with one second remaining in overtime to give Wilkes a 77-74 win over Washington & Jefferson.
Both teams are 1-1.
Steve Stravinski sent the game into overtime by hitting two free throws with 30 seconds left to tie it at 68-68. W&J led by as many as 11 points in the second half and saw an eight-point lead evaporate in the final 2:13.
Wizar had a team-high 17 points and was one of five players in double figures. Stravinski had 10 points and nine rebounds.
Nate Bellhy scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for W&J. Doug Johnson added 16 points, Mitch Locher 15 and Nick Stone 10.
Johns Hopkins 77, Wash & Jeff 72: Stacy Fairey scored a team-high 18 points and Johns Hopkins erased a 10-point lead by Washington & Jefferson in the second half to take a 77-72 victory in the consolation game of the Mike Durgala Memorial Tournament at JHU.
The Blue Jays improved to 1-1, while the Presidents fell to 0-2.
After building a 42-34 lead at the half, W&J pushed the lead to 44-34 on a layup by Valerie Dunlap early in the second half and still led by nine at 52-43 after a Beka Bellhy basket with just over 16 minutes remaining.
A jumper by Fairey then ignited a 15-2 run for the Blue Jays. Ciara McCullagh’s jumper with 9:17 remaining gave the Blue Jays a 58-54 lead that Hopkins would never relinquish.
W&J had four players in double figures led by Bellhy’s game-high 19 points. All-Tournament selection Chelsea Apke added 16 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Wayne State 77, Cal 62: Wayne State bolted to a 13-0 run to start the game and kept that margin pretty much throughout in a 77-62 win over California University.
Shareta Brown led Wayne State (1-0) with 19 points and 14 rebounds in 25 minutes. Des Lavita-Stephens chipped in with 17 points and Kayla Briggs contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Warriors closed the first half with an 11-4 run to take a 44-27 lead.
Emma Mahady had a game-high 23 points for Cal (0-3) and Ryah Gadson added 14 and Elena Antonenko 12.
