Waynesburg stopped by snow, Brockport

2 min read

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Freshman running back Dan Andrews rushed for 188 yards on 29 carries, and Jake Spalik returned a punt 40 yards through the snow for a score, as the College of Brockport defeated Waynesburg 19-12 Saturday afternoon in the ECAC Northwest Bowl.

On a day when scoring was difficult because of poor weather conditions, Andrews rambled 82 yards for a touchdown only 46 seconds into the game, giving Brockport (8-3) a lead it would not relinquish.

Snow flurries quickly shifted to near-whiteout conditions early in the game. The mounting snow covered the field’s yard lines in the first half.

Waynesburg pulled to within 6-3 on its first possession, getting a 25-yard field goal from Alex Henry. Brockport, however, used Spalik’s punt return in the second quarter to push its lead to 13-3.

Waynesburg mounted a long drive in the third quarter, getting a first-and-goal situation before illegal procedure and pass interference penalties pushed the Yellow Jackets back to the Brockport 30-yard line. Waynesburg did salvage a score, getting a 22-yard field goal from Henry that cut Brockport’s lead to 13-6.

The Golden Eagles, however, went 70 yards in 11 plays in the fourth quarter for the game-clinching touchdown, a two-yard plunge by Shireem Cobb that made the score 19-6 with 4:12 to play.

Waynesburg made one final push, driving 75 yards in 13 plays and scoring on an eight-yard TD pass from Carter Hill to Bernie Thompson with 1:42 remaining. The Yellow Jackets got the ball back with 32 seconds left, but four incomplete passes ended the game.

Hill completed 19 of 48 passes for 219 yards for Waynesburg, which ends the season with a 7-4 record. Linebacker John Sikora led the Yellow Jackets’ defense with 10 tackles and an interception.
