Apke’s jump shot sends W&J past CMU

Senior forward Chelsea Apke capped a career night by hitting a short jump shot with 12 seconds remaining to give the Washington & Jefferson College women’s basketball team an 87-86 victory over previously undefeated Carnegie Mellon at the Henry Memorial Center.

Apke became the first President since 2006 to score 30 points. Apke made her first 10 shots from the field and recorded 30 points on 12 of 16 shooting, and added 12 rebounds, four assists and two steals. She is the first President to record a 30-point game since Amanda Stanonik scored 32 against Thiel Feb. 11, 2006.

Sophomore forward Beka Bellhy also had a career-high for the Presidents with 22 points and seven rebounds. Bellhy made 10 of her 13 field goal attempts.

W&J led 50-33 at halftime but CMU (5-1) battled back to take the lead, 86-85, on a layup by Lisa Murphy. Apke sank her basket and a jumper by CMU’s Gabriella West missed.

Murphy paced the Tartans with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Kara Seamon added 17 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Presidents, who shot 52 percent. Junior guard Alexa DelGreco finished with 11 points.

West Virginia Wesleyan 76, California 61: West Virginia Wesleyan made 12 three-point field goals on the way to a 76-61 victory over California University in a nonconferen game at the Convocation Center.

Cal fell to 1-5 while the Bobcats moved to 3-5.

Junior forward Alonzo Murphy led four Cal players in double figures with 13 points. Junior Tynell Fortune and sophomore Jake Jacubec eached finished with 12 points. Junior Arman Marks added 11 points.

T.J. Thompson scored a game-high 23 with four threes for West Virginia Wesleyan. Chris Dewberry hit three of them and finished with 13 points. The Bobcats hit 12 of 24 three-point attempts.

Muskingum 85, Wash & Jeff 63: Muskingum closed the first half on a 20-7 run and never looked back in defeating Washington & Jefferson 85-63 in nonconference action.

The Muskies (3-0) remained undefeated during a game in which 31 different players saw action. Muskingum shot 47 percent, including 8 of 17 from three-point range, and outrebounded W&J (3-2) by a 52-38 margin. Logan Kimble led four Muskies in double digits with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Nate Bellhy scored 20 points and Mike Resnik added 11 for W&J.

Waynesburg 83, Wells 66: Junior Casey Hope scored 14 points, including hitting all 10 attempts from the free throw line, to power Waynesburg to an 83-66 victory over Wells in a nonconference game at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Waynesburg moved to 4-2 and Wells fell to 1-5.

Junior Thomas Ellis and junior forward Jason Propst each scored 11 points and sophomore B.J. Durham chipped in with 10.

Junior Kenny Klase pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets. Hope had a game-high five assists.
