Hill’s passing, Tolliver’s return spark Waynesburg
GROVE CITY – Carter Hill threw four touchdown passes – to four different receivers – and Josh Tolliver returned a fumble 75 yards for a score as Waynesburg University rolled to a 38-0 victory over Grove City at Robert E. Thorn Field.
The win moves Waynesburg to 3-1 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and 5-1 overall.
The turning point in the game came late in the first quarter when Grove City, trailing 7-0, had a first down at the Waynesburg 19-yard line when tailback Steve Maskrey fumbled. The loose ball was scooped up by Tolliver, a junior defensive end, who rambled 75 yards to give the Yellow Jackets a 14-0 lead.
After Tolliver’s big play, Grove City (1-3, 3-3) didn’t penetrate the Waynesburg 25-yard line until the fourth quarter, when the Wolverines reached the 13 before Stephen Holt intercepted a pass by Brian Pell for a touchback.
Hill completed 22 of 38 passes for 332 yards. He gave Waynesburg the only points it would need less than seven minutes into the game when he connected with Mike Ferraro on a seven-yard touchdown that capped the Yellow Jackets’ 76-yard opening drive.
Hill threw a six-yard TD pass to Andrew English early in the second quarter, and a 49-yarder to Tim Cooper that stretched the lead to 28-0. It was the first catch of the season for Cooper.
Hill threw his fourth touchdown pass, a two-yarder to Willie Leavell, on the final play of the first half.
The only scoring in the second half came early in the fourth quarter when South Fayette graduate Alex Henry booted a career-long 43-yard field goal.
