Waynesburg High School hired former West Virginia and California University standout Drew Schifino as its new boys basketball coach Tuesday night. He replaces Dave Sarra, who resigned in April. Sarra was re-hired as the assistant coach.

Schifino played three seasons at West Virginia and was second in the Big East in scoring as a sophomore (2002-03) at 20.1 points per game. Schifino was dismissed from the team midway through his junior season by then-head coach John Beilein.

A Penn Hills graduate, Schifino briefly attended Middle Tennessee State before enrolling at California. He played in 11 games for the Vulcans in 2004-05 before being declared ineligible by the NCAA because he had attended a team workout at Middle Tennessee.

Schifino played professional basketball for the Pittsburgh Xplosion of the CBA, and in the Czech Republic.

Waynesburg was 5-17 last season, including 0-12 in Section 5-AAA. The Raiders had only three seniors on last year’s roster.
