Local Briefs: Bethel Park edges Peters Township
Tatianna Ruzzini scored her second goal midway through the second half to propel Bethel Park to a 3-2 victory over Peters township in a nonsection match.
It was the first loss for Peters Township in about a year.
Halle Hammer scored the other goal for Bethel Park (3-0).
Emily Franty and Maddie Schwerzler each scored a goal for Peters Township (3-1).
• Six different players scored to send Trinity to a 6-1 victory over Eden Christian in a nonsection match.
Baylee Weaver, Caitlin Guthrie, Jenna Beacker, Gig Veltre, Madison Hornak and Baylie Swart head the goals for the Hillers (1-1).
Eden Christian is 0-2.
• Kiera Watkins had a pair of goals as Charleroi topped Waynesburg, 4-0, in a nonsection match.
Jessica Day and Rachel Ritzer also scored for Charleroi (2-0).
Del Bredniak scored two goals to help Washington down cross-town rival Trinity, 3-2, in a nonsection match.
Ted Dragich added a goal for Wash High (1-4).
Goal scorers were not provided for Trinity.
Liz Doherty’s score off a penalty corner pass with just over 8 minutes remaining in the game gave SUNY-Genesseo a 3-2 nonconference women’s field hockey victory over Washington & Jefferson Saturday.
Sarah Malinak scored a pair of first half goals for SUNY-Genesseo (2-1).
Kelly Knisel scored both goals for W&J (2-1), while Morgan Brozena had eight stops in goal.
Despite a 17-4 advantage in shots, California was unable to score in a 0-0 tie with Tusculum Saturday in a nonconference women’s soccer match.
Ashley Magruda was in goal for Cal (0-1-1). Marissa Williams was in goal for Tusculum.
• Hannah Zacharias was solid in goal as Ohio Weslyan defeated Washington & Jefferson, 1-0, in a nonconference match.
Morgan Kinyon was in goal for W&J (0-3).
Juan Amaya’s goal early in the second half was all Chestnut Hill needed to defeat California University, 1-0, in a non-conference men’s soccer match Saturday.
Shane Donovan was in goal for Cal (1-1).
• Evan Porter’s score off a rebound got the scoring started and Dennison rolled to a 5-1 non-conference win over Washington & Jefferson.
Cody Peddicord scored the lone goal for W&J.
Former Avella High School standout football player and wrestler Ralph Cindrich will be inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Oct. 19 at the Holiday Inn East, Harrisburg.
Cindrich, who was inducted into the Washington-Greene chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1999, was a two-time first-team all-WPIAL selection in football at Avella in 1966 and 1967 won a pair of WPIAL wrestling championships. He went on to wrestler and play football at Pitt.
He was a fourth-place finisher at heavyweight in the NCAA wrestling championships and a was twice named All-American in football.
A fifth-round draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 1972, Cindrich played four seasons in the NFL for the Patriots and Oilers.
After his football career ended, Cindrich became one of the most prominent player representatives in football.
