Bliss plays in W&J victory over Grove City

1 min read

GROVE CITY – Quarterback Matt Bliss, who was not expected to play in Saturday night’s game against Grove City, did just that, and tailback Dion Wiegand scored five touchdowns as Washington & Jefferson College routed the Wolverines, 40-19, in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Bliss injured his knee in last week’s 42-21 loss to St. John Fisher and was expected to be out for two or three weeks. He played two series, completing 11 of 15 passes for 90 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions, then came out of the game. Freshman Pete Coughlin and sophomore Kevin Mechas each received playing time.

Wiegand had three rushing touchdowns of one yard, one from two yards out and a 76-yard run to the end zone. He finished with 24 carries for 172 yards. Ryan Ruffing carried 11 times for 84 yards and a touchdown.

Alex Baroffio caught seven passes for 46 yards and Dan Lucas had five for 53 yards.

The Presidents’ defense, scorched for 733 total yards against St. John Fisher, held Grove City to just 60 yards rushing and 330 total. Sam Comly and Marlon Brown each had an interception.

Grove City quarterback Brian Pell completed 21 of 35 for 214 yards and was intercepted twice.

Both teams are 2-1.
