WAYNESBURG – When dissecting the ups and downs of this season, Waynesburg High School’s football team will think about Friday night’s game against Southmoreland and cringe.

The Raiders suffered a devastating 14-13 loss to a Southmoreland team that had not won through the first four weeks of the season.

The Scotties dominated the second half of the game and rallied from a 13-7 deficit at halftime.

Waynesburg fell to 1-3 in the WPIAL Class AA Interstate Conference and 2-3 overall. The Raiders had a chance to pass Yough (2-3), which fell to Mt. Pleasant, for fourth place in the conference standings.

Aaron Bailey scored two touchdowns for Southmoreland, breaking off a 27-yard run in the first half and a 15-yard scamper that gave the Scotties their first lead in the third quarter.

Waynesburg had one drive stopped by an interception but did manage to drive deep into Southmoreland territory in the final minute. With 12 seconds to go, Colby Collins was intercepted to end the threat.

Waynesburg turned a blocked punt into the first score of the game. John Glen Davis went over from three yards out and Austin Herrod made the extra-point kick with 9:31 left in the first quarter.

Southmoreland came right back and drove inside the Raiders’ 10-yard line. But a run by quarterback Brennen Bunner was stopped at the one-yard line on fourth down. Darren Tretinik made the tackle for the Raiders.

Southmoreland tied the game in the second quarter when Bailey scored his first TD with 7:40 left in the half.

Waynesburg had 201 total yards, including 145 on the ground.

Davis rushed for 156 yards on 21 carries and Bailey had 117 on 14.
