Jim McNutt/Observer-Reporter Southmoreland's quarterback, Brennan Bunner, (3) has nowhere to go as Waynesburgs' Austin Herrod (9), John Glen Davis (5), Jack Fudala (26) and the rest of the defense drive him back for no gain in the 2nd quarter. Waynesburg High School hosted Southmoreland at Waynesburg field Friday, September 27, 2013.

It was supposed to be a battle of two of the WPIAL’s best passers, but when it ended, Brett Brumbaugh of South Fayette left no doubt who dominated this encounter. Brumbaugh completed 19 of 26 passes for 306 yards and three touchdowns as the Lions roared past Seton-La Salle, 45-3, in a Class AA Century Conference game. The Rebels quarterback Tyler Perone could produce only three points.

Meanwhile, Clairton downed Fort Cherry 36-28 in a penalty-filled game. The teams combined for 273 yards in penalties. Trinity and Canon-McMillan each got their first wins of the season with the Hillers edging Laurel Highlands, 10-8, and C-M stopping Plum 17-7 for Ron Coder’s first victory as Canon-McMillan’s head coach.

Waynesburg had two crucial turnovers and fell to previously winless Southmoreland, 14-13. James Wheeler rushed for 365 yards and scored six touchdowns to help West Mifflin down Ringgold, 42-28. Finally, Charleroi got its first win of the season, 21-14, over Deer Lakes.
