Soccer roundup: Franty’s goal gives PT 1-0 win over Canon-Mac
Peters Township’s Emily Franty scored 15 minutes into a Section 5-AAA match against visiting Canon McMillan Monday night and propelled the Indians to a 1-0 victory.
Franty scored on a give-and-go from Laura Carpenter at the 25-minute mark, and Megan Parker recorded six saves for the three-time defending state champions.
Peters Township is 7-0 in section and 11-3 overall, while Canon McMillan moves to 5-2-1 in section and 7-3-2 overall.
• Trinity scored halfway through the first period and held on to defeat McKeesport 1-0 in a Section 4-AAA matchup. Bailey Swart scored for the Hillers on an assist by Hailey Spears.
Beth McClelland recorded five saves to secure her third shutout of the season.
Trinity is 4-3 in section and 5-5 overall, while McKeesport drops to 1-8, 4-9.
• Three separate players scored to give Bentworth a 3-1 victory over Chartiers Houston in Section 2-A.
Madison Fowler, Monica Hughes and Madison Jones scored for the Bearcats, and Nikki Zehar tallied Charters Houston’s lone goal. Junior goalkeeper Jeanna Brewer recorded six saves for Bentworth (5-3, 7-5).
• McGuffey and West Mifflin battled to a 0-0 tie through two overtime periods as both goalkeepers held each offense at bay in a Section 4-AA matchup. Kate Denning made 10 saves for the Highlanders as McGuffey moves to 2-5-1, 3-5-1. West Mifflin is 3-5-1, 3-6-1.
Josh Kruczek scored three goals – all during the first half – as Canon-McMillan cruised to a 6-0 victory over host Belle Vernon in a non-section game Monday night.
Kruzek also assisted on a goal as the Big Macs improved their record to 10-1-2 and bounced back from the only loss of the season, Saturday at Upper St. Clair. Ivan Vivaros, Alex Adlak and Austin Wancowicz each contributed a goal for C-M, which led 4-0 at halftime.
Jake Wilcox, Corey McCurdy and Nick Sodini each had an assist for C-M, and Alex Hannigan was the goalkeeper.
Belle Vernon is 5-9.
• Trinity scored two second-half goals and pulled away for a 3-0 victory over West Mifflin.
Gabo Lopez, Anthony Salvatori and Alec Bellcastro scored for Trinity (3-5, 5-6). Goalkeeper Ben Johnson earned the shutout.
