Steelers sign CB McCain for depth
The Steelers continued their busy offseason Tuesday, signing veteran Houston cornerback Brice McCain to a one-year deal worth $795,000.
McCain, 27, will count just $635,000 against the Steelers’ salary cap, leaving the team with less than $500,000 in remaining cap space.
That does not appear to be keeping the Steelers from continuing to shop. Pittsburgh will host former Oakland and Indianapolis wide receiver Darius Heyward-Bey today.
The signing of McCain brings the Steelers’ scorecard to six free agents from other teams added this offseason, including three who are expected to start: safety Mike Mitchell, defensive lineman Cam Thomas and wide receiver Lance Moore.
Linebacker Arthur Moats and running back LeGarrette Blount were signed last week for depth.
McCain also appears to have been added to provide depth.
McCain, (5-9, 187) played in 72 games – primarily as the nickel corner – for the Texans, who selected him in the sixth round of the 2009 draft.
He has 10 career starts, including four in 2013, when he had 30 tackles and one interception.
For his career, McCain has five interceptions and 32 passes defensed.
Houston signed McCain to a three-year, $5.25-million contract in 2013, but released him March 11 in a salary cap-related move.
He is expected to contribute on special teams for the Steelers while also battling William Gay for the nickel corner position.
The Steelers hosted a pair of potential draft picks Tuesday, meeting with Mississippi wide receiver Donte Moncrief and Baylor running back Lache Seastrunk.
Moncrief is considered a second-round prospect while Seastrunk carries a third-to-fourth-round grade.
