Briefs: Cal’s Conte wins 500th
California head coach Mike Conte reached the 500-win plateau Sunday as the Vulcans swept a PSAC doubleheader from Indiana, 5-1 and 8-1.
Justin Taylor went the distance in the opener for California (5-7, 16-12), striking out nine.
Carmichaels graduate Chuck Gasti had an RBI single and Chris Mitko tripled in a four-run fourth inning for California.
Dylan Tice had a double for IUP (5-7, 11-14).
That win was Conte’s 500th, making him the third active PSAC and 42nd in NCAA Division II to reach the milestone. Conte is 501-342-4 in 18 seasons at California, where he is the winningest coach in school history.
Jack Dennis allowed three hits in 5 2/3 innings in the nightcap to earn the win.
John Orr had a two-run single in a six-run fourth inning for California.
• Nick Schiovani had three hits and Trent Smith and Josh Doody had two hits each as Thiel picked up its first Presidents’ Athletic Conference win of the season with a 10-7 victory over Washington & Jefferson Sunday.
The Tomcats (1-9, 7-14) scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning after scoring three in the first.
Chartiers-Houston graduate Derek McIlvaine had three hits, while Josh Staniscia, D.J. Michalski and Kyle McClain had doubles for W&J (8-2, 13-9). Joe Vita took the loss.
Peters Township graduate Kelsey Cunningham became Washington & Jefferson’s career leader in doubles while also moving into second place on the school’s all-time hits list as the Presidents split a Presidents’ Athletic Conference doubleheader with Saint Vincent College, winning game one 12-2 before losing the nightcap, 3-1.
Cunningham had a pair of doubles in the opener to give her 40 in her career. She had three of W&J’s 19 hits in the game and two in the nightcap, including the 165th of her career. She passed Valerie Schultz for the career doubles lead and for second place on the school’s all-time hits list.
Ally Vrcek limited the Presidents (4-2, 10-6) to one run in the nightcap for Saint Vincent (2-2, 16-6).
Kayla McBride scored 28 points and Jewell Loyd added 16 to lead unbeaten Notre Dame to an 87-61 win over Maryland in the Final Four on Sunday night.
The Irish (37-0) will play the winner of UConn and Stanford on Tuesday night for the national championship.
