Baseball: Cal gets split; Waynesburg routs Geneva
Sophomore Mick Fennell hit a two-run homer and earned a complete-game victory as the Vulcans salvaged a split of a PSAC West Division doubleheader Tuesday at Indiana. Cal lost the opener 1-0 and won the second game 5-3.
Cal moves to 17-13 overall while IUP is 12-15. The Vulcans and Crimson Hawks, along with Pitt-Johnstown, are tied for fourth place in the division at 6-8 at the midway point of league play.
In the second game, Fennell (3-2) earned his first win since March 15 by allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. He forced IUP to leave runners in scoring position in each of the last three innings while tossing his eighth career complete game.
IUP won the opener by scoring the game’s only run on wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Losing pitcher Cory Craig gave up only three hits and one walk in 6 1/3 innings. IUP’s Jared Weed threw a complete-game two-hitter.
• Luke Carter led Waynesburg’s 21-hit attack with a two-run homer and four RBI as the Yellow Jackets rolled to an 18-2 win over host Geneva in a PAC game.
Winning pitcher Connor Furwa threw seven shutout innings, allowing only three hits.
Jonathan Kletzli had a home run, double and three RBI for Waynesburg. Geneva fell to 3-8, 7-17.
