Softball: Canon-Mac’s 19-game section winning streak ends

Canon-McMillan softball’s streak of dominance in Section 4-AAAA came to an end Tuesday night. After winning 19-straight section games dating back to April 28, 2012, the Big Macs fell to host Baldwin, 15-3, in a five-inning game.

The Highlanders (4-1, 5-1) trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the first when their starting pitcher, Anastasia Hale, hit a two-run single and an error scored another run. Baldwin did not look back as it added six runs in the second inning and six in the fourth. Ashley Brady had two RBI for the Highlanders and Samantha Wamplur went 2-for-4 with a double.

Canon-McMillan (4-1, 4-1) could only muster one run in the top of the fifth as the game ended early.

Hale also struck out five batters and the Big Macs committed five errors. Olivia Lorusso hit a solo home run in the third inning, but it was too little too late. Canon-McMillan lost its first section game in almost two years with the last loss coming against Baldwin.

• Winning pitcher Katie Tarr had four hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs as Burgettstown defeated Bishop Canevin, 11-1, in a five-inning Section 1-A game.

Paige Sherman also doubled for Burgettstown (4-0, 6-3).

Kylee Sonson was the losing pitcher for the Crusaders (2-1, 2-1).

• Leadoff hitter Kellyn perich went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs as Peters Township moved into sole possession fo first place in Section 4-AAAA with a 7-5 win over vsiting Upper St. Clair.

Winning pitcher Carly Konopka tossed a four-hitter with nine strikeouts as the Indians moved to 4-0 int he section and 4-3 overall. The Indians have won four in a row.

Emily Lusk scored two runs for PT.

• Winning pitcher Celina Cantini had four hits, including a pair of homers, and drove in seven runs to lead Ringgold to a 14-4 six-inning victory over Moon in Section 2-AAA.

Cara Richards added four hits for the Rams (1-3, 1-3).

• Marlie Mounts hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Cassie Weiss struck out six batters as McGuffey defeated Bentworth, 11-1, in Section 2-AA.

Weiss pitched a complete game and allowed just five hits, while Mounts went 3-for-4 to lead the Highlanders (4-1, 7-1) to victory. Sammie Weiss also went 3-for-5 with three singles and Rachel Kleinhans added two doubles.

Casey Hites took the loss for Bentworth (2-3, 3-6), but got the Bearcats’ lone run of the game on a solo home run in the fifth inning.

• Sophomore Morgan Simkovic hit a three-run homer and junior Maddie Ludrosky pitched a five-hitter as Jefferson-Morgan won its third straight game, 8-1 over visiting Monessen, in Section 2-A.

Simkovic broke open a 4-1 game with her home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Regan Rush had three hits for J-M (5-1, 6-1), which took the lead with a two-run first inning.

Losing pitcher Shelby Minardi had three of Monessen’s five hits.

• Brenna Pribanic threw a two-hit shutout and host South Allegheny dealt Charleroi its first loss of the season, 2-0, in Section 4-AA.

Pribanic, Shannon Connors and Julia Gianardio each doubled for South Allegheny (2-1, 4-1). One of Charleroi’s two hits was a triple by Jordan Swarmer. The Cougars also are 2-1, 4-1.

• Bailey Bennington threw a four-hitter and West Greene took advantage of 11 errors by host Mapletown to defeat the Maples, 15-1, in a five-inning Section 2-A game.

Bennington struck out 10 and helped her cause with a double. Madison Raber tripled for West Greene (4-1, 4-4), and Autumn Widdup and Marissa Rode each doubled.

Abby Shipley tripled and scored on an RBI by losing pitcher Jordan Adams.

Mapletown is 0-4.

• Erica Burns threw her second consecutive no-hitter as Carmichaels defeated California 16-0 in a three-inning Section 2-A game for the Mikes’ fourth win in a row.

Burns struck out eight and was backed by 10 Carmichaels hits, including a double by Caroline Cree.

Carmichaels is 4-1 in the section (6-1 overall) and locked in a three-way tie for second place, a half-game behind leader Jefferson-Morgan.
