Baseball: California walks off with win
Justin Taylor drew a five-pitch walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to force home Ben Carson with the winning run as California University edged Penn State-Greater Allegheny 9-8 Wednesday in a non-conference game at Consol Energy Park.
With the score 8-8, Carson led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and advanced when a sacrifice bunt was misplayed for an error. Chuck Gasti followed with an infield single that loaded the bases, setting up Taylor’s game-winning walk.
Matt Peters had a home run and three RBI to lead Cal (18-13) at the plate. Andre Jones, the last of five Vulcans pitcher, was credited with the win.
Adam Wehr was 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI for Penn State-Greater Allegheny (15-8).
• Josh Staniscia and Kyle McLain each drove in three runs as Washington & Jefferson rolled to a 13-3 victory over Westminster in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game at Ross Memorial Park.
W&J (9-2, 14-9) swept the season series from Westminster (3-5, 6-14).
Staniscia was 3-for-5 with a triple, three runs and three RBI for the Presidents, who scored the game’s final 10 runs. McLain was 3-for-4.
Winning pitcher Tim Mulvey allowed three runs over five innings.
