Softball: Mapletown ends 30-game section losing streak

Abby Shipley went 4-for-4 with four doubles and four runs to power Mapletown to a 10-5 victory over California in a Section 2-A game.

It was the first section win in three years and snapped a 30-game losing streak in section games for the Maples (1-4, 1-4). Their last section win came in May 2011 against Beth-Center. Winning pitcher Jordan Adams went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and five RBI. Hannah Hockin had a two-run double and Madison Bogden doubled.

Destiny Gudell tripled and Makaylee Adams doubled for the Trojans (0-6, 0-6).

• Morgan Ellek threw a three-hit shutout and Sami Scopel drove in three runs as Burgettstown remained undefeated in Section 1-A with a 10-0 victory in six innings over visiting Northgate.

Ellek struck out 11 and did not issue a walk. She also hit one of Burgettstown’s four doubles. Scopel had a single and double, and Kate Tarr and Paige Sherman each doubled for the Blue Devils (5-0, 7-3).

Northgate remains winless at 0-3, 0-4.

• Washington combined two hits with 17 walks and won its first game of the season, 17-1 in three innings over visiting Fort Cherry in Section 2-AA.

Winning pitcher Alanna Ammon threw a one-hitter – a double by Galina Lodge – and struck out four. Gabby Bocanegra hit a three-run double for Wash High (1-3, 1-4) and Savannah Ammons scored three runs.

Fort Cherry is 0-4, 0-6.

• Bentworth scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to rally for a 6-3 victory over host Charleroi in a non-section game.

Aubree Yates and winning pitcher Casey Hite each had two hits for Bentworth (4-6), which trailed 3-2 after five innings. The Bearcats took advantage of six errors by Charleroi (4-2).

Jordan Swarmer had two hits including a double for Charleroi.

• Delaney Elling and Olivia Gray combined for eight RBI to help Trinity take a 13-4 victory from West Allegheny in a Section 2-AAA game.

Elling went 4-for-4 with a double for the Hillers (2-0, 6-0) and Gray had a two-run home run and single. Halie Justice went 4-for-4 with a double and winning pitcher Paige Galentine added two doubles. Jasmin Fuqua doubled.

Brooke Wilson had a double and triple for West Allegheny (3-2, 3-2).

• Bailey Bennington struck out 12 and allowed only two hits to send West Greene to a 6-0 victory over Avella in a non-section game played at Consol Energy Park.

Bennington wnet 2-for-2 with a double and RBI for the Pioneers (4-1, 5-4). Madison Raber went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI and Autumn Widdup tripled and drove in two runs. Alyssa Raber doubled.

Jade Georgett and Rachel Marshall had the hits for Avella (1-1, 1-2).

• Marlie Mounts hit a three-run home run, added a double and drove in seven runs to lead McGuffey past Chartiers-Houston, 21-4, in a five-inning Section 2-AA game.

The Bucs (2-2, 4-4) held a 2-1 lead heading into the top of the third when Mounts hit a three-run home run. Rachel Kleinhans added two doubles and five runs batted in for the Highlanders (5-1, 7-1), while Cassie Weiss struck out seven to earn the win.

Megan Kraushaar had a double, home run and three RBI for Chariters-Houston. Haley Sutton and Jalynn Myers each had a double for the Bucs.

• Sara Jubas hit two doubles, a triple and drove in four runs to lead South Fayette past Moon, 13-5, in Section 2-AAA.

Ashley Iagnemma earned the win for the Lions (4-0, 5-0) after striking out 12 batters, while Emily Bryan drove in two runs for South Fayette. Moon (1-3, 1-3) committed three errors and allowed 14 hits.
