Baseball: Tassone’s home run wins for Peters Twp.

2 min read

Ryan Tassone hit a three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning Saturday afternoon to give Peters Township a 3-1 come-from-behind win over visiting Upper St. Clair in Section 5-AAAA.

USC (2-2, 6-3) had taken a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, but a bunt single by PT’s Frank Jezioro and an error that allowed Tim Swoope to reach base in the sixth set up Tassone’s game-winning homer to left centerfield.

The win improved the Indians’ record to 4-3, including 3-1 in the section.

Winning pitcher Josh Glicksman struck out four in two innings of relief. PT starter Tyler Schmidt pitched into the sixth.

USC had four hits and each was a double, including two by Gannon Rooney.

• Evan Smith’s RBI-single in the top of the third inning capped off a three-run rally for Beth-Center in a 3-2 Section 2-AA win over Fort Cherry.

Tyler Ross doubled to lead off the third inning for the Bulldogs (1-3, 2-5), who trailed 2-0.

Lane Zekir was the winning pitcher and Lucas Zeline earned a save.

Colton Kobrys doubled for Fort Cherry (0-6, 0-6). Matt Heslin was the hard-luck losing pitcher, allowing just three hits and striking out 12.

• Jake Rothka and Zach Atkinson drove in two runs each as Bentworth defeated Burgettstown, 6-2, in a Section 2-AA game.

Andy Lutes was the winning pitcher for Bentworth (2-3, 6-4), which was assisted by six Burgettstown errors.

The Blue Devils (2-3, 3-4) received two hits from Brett Presinsky.
