Baseball: California holds on, stays undefeated
Josh Luko and Ron Baron combined to lead undefeated California to a 6-4 victory over visiting Jefferson-Morgan a Section 1-A game Monday afternoon.
Luko was the winning pitcher and hit a run-scoring double, and Baron earned a save and delivered the game’s key hit, a two-run single in the Trojans’ four-run third inning that opened a 6-1 lead for Cal (4-0, 9-0).
Austin Clark and Jakob Bissett each hit a double for J-M (1-3, 1-7), which pulled to within 6-4 with a three-run fifth inning.
• Noah Lolley threw a one-hit shutout and faced only two batters over the minimum as Trinity picked up its first Section 5-AAA victory by blanking host McGuffey 7-0.
Garrett Briant hit a solo home run for Trinity (1-4, 4-6) in the top of the first inning. It was the only extra-base hit among 11 hits by the Hillers. Blake Rohrbacher was 2-for-3.
Lolley struck out two, walked one and threw only 67 pitches in the complete-game outing. He took a perfect game into the fifth inning and a no-hitter into the seventh. The latter was broken up by Nate Whipkey’s single.
McGuffey is 0-3, 0-6.
•Cory Fuller threw a two-hitter and visiting Carmichaels rolled to a 12-1 victory over Mapletown in a six-inning Section 1-A game.
Carmichaels (3-1, 5-1) remained in second place in the section. The Mikes were tied 1-1 in the third but scored 11 runs over the final four innings. Mapletown (0-4, 1-6) committed nine errors.
Ty Cole and Jacob Kinsell doubled for Carmichaels. Mapletown’s only hits were doubles by losing pitcher Nick Popernack and Colby Kincell.
• Cody Dobbin hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and Avella held West Greene to just one run as the Eagles defeated the Pioneers, 10-1, in Section 1-A.
Santino Paris was the winning pitcher for Avella (3-1, 4-1) and Derek Allen had two doubles for the Eagles. West Greene (1-3, 3-4) had just one hit. Tim Fraysier had two RBI for Avella.
