4 min read

Carmichaels senior Brandon Lawless struck out 10 and pitched a no-hitter Thursday to lead the Mikes past visiting West Greene, 3-0, in Section 1-A.

Lawless added a double for Carmichaels (4-1, 6-1) and walked just one batter. The game was scoreless entering the bottom of the fourth, when Ty Cole hit a two-run double and Cory Fuller added a RBI-single to give the Mikes a 3-0 lead.

Ben Carlisle was the losing pitcher for West Greene (1-4, 3-5) after walking six and striking out four. The win secures Carmichaels’ spot as the second-place team in the section behind California.

• Bethel Park senior first baseman Carmen Jansante scored the winning-run on a wild pitch to lead the Black Hawks past Canon-McMillan, 4-3, in an 11-inning Section 5-AAAA game.

Big Macs pitcher Jake Trainor walked the first two batters of the 11th inning before being relieved by sophomore Matt Mish. Mish struck out the next two batters before a passed ball allowed Jansante to score from third.

Teagan Piechnick hit a triple for Canon-McMillan (2-2, 7-3) and Jared Beach added two RBI. Winning pitcher Jake Zufall struck out six hitters in three innings of relief for Bethel Park (3-2, 7-4).

• Jake Rothka went 2-for-2 and scored both of Bentworth’s runs as the Bearcats defeated Waynesburg, 2-1, in a non-section game.

Rothka scored the first run for Bentworth (7-5) in the first inning on a delayed double steal and added the winning run in the third on a passed ball.

Hunter Robinson hit a triple and a fifth inning solo home run for the Raiders (4-5).

• Avonworth starting pitcher Chris O’Malley struck out seven in four no-hit innings to lead Antelopes past Fort Cherry, 13-0, in a non-section game.

O’Malley received help from his offense, which scored eight runs in the fourth inning after leading 5-0.

• Jonathan Spina pitched a three-hit shutout and section leader Washington used a fast start to defeat Burgettstown 13-0 in a five-inning 2-AA game at Consol Energy Park.

Washington (6-1, 8-3) scored five runs in both the first and second innings and cruised to its fifth consecutive victory.

Kurt Atkins and Jordan Mooney each went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs for the Prexies. Atkins’ two hits included a triple.

Spina, who struck out seven and did not walk a batter in throwing a three-hitter, helped his cause by hitting a double.

Burgettstown slipped to 2-4 in section and 8-5 overall.

• Tyler Day hit a three-run homer and Ryan Mele pitched a five-inning shutout to lead Chartiers-Houston past Charleroi, 13-0, in Section 2-AA.

Day hit the home run in the fourth for the Bucs (5-1, 7-1), who led 7-0 entering the inning. Miles Williamson added a double for Chartiers-Houston.

Chartiers-Houston held on to second place in the section with the victory.

• Senior third baseman Ronnie Baron hit a two-run homer and California remained undefeated with an 8-1 victory over host Avella in Section 1-A.

Baron hit his home run in the third inning to give the Trojans (5-0, 11-0) a 4-1 lead. That was enough support for winning pitcher Josh Luko, who scattered eight hits but walked only one batter. He struck out five.

Baron went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.

Derek Allen had a double for Avella (3-2, 4-2), which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

• Jefferson-Morgan scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a throwing error and defeated visiting Mapletown in Section 1-A.

The Rockets (2-3, 2-7) trailed 4-1 in the fourth inning but pulled even at 4-4 entering the sixth. Aaron Weaver hit a leadoff double for J-M and the next batter was hit by a pitch. The Rockets then attempted to advance the runners with a bunt, which was thrown away for a three-base error that made the score 6-4. Austin Clark then provided an insurance run with a sacrifice fly.

Clark, Josh Bissett, Isaac Dean and Jason Dotts each had a double for J-M. Winning pitcher Logan Bowman threw a five-hitter with eight strikeouts.

Keith Popernack doubled for Mapletown (0-5, 1-7).
