W&J, Waynesburg eliminated from PAC tournament
Kaley Burkhardt scored all 10 of her school-record goals during the first half to help top-seeded Saint Vincent earn a 18-14 victory over fourth-seeded Washington & Jefferson Friday in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Tournament semifinals.
Alex Dikos had six goals for W&J, which ends its season at 0-10. Saint Vincent improves to 10-3 overall and will host Thiel in today’s championship match.
• Beth Snider and Cassy Mahdi scored six goals each as Thiel topped Waynesburg, 17-6, in the PAC Lacrosse Tournament.
Makayla Vidosh, Toria Shepherd and Jess Rains scored two goals each for Waynesburg, which finishes its season at 3-9. Thiel (9-7) will face Saint Vincent in today’s championship.
The California University of Pennsylvania men’s golf team was selected to the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Super Region Championships Friday evening. The event will be held at Edgewood Country Club in Charleston, W.Va., from May 5-7.
The top three teams and the top two golfers not with a team from each super regional will advance to the NCAA National Championships. The Atlantic Region is comprised of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), Mountain East Conference (MEC) and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
The Vulcans were one of eight at-large selections from the Atlantic Region, as Millersville (PSAC) and Virginia State (CIAA) earned automatic qualifiers.
Guy Montecalvo led Washington High School’s football team to a state title in 2001 and, as current athletic director at Canon-McMillan, has presided over state champion programs in wrestling, baseball and softball.
