Waynesburg’s Louco, W&J’s Mangold earn PAC track honors
The Grove City College men’s track and field team edged three-time defending Presidents’ Athletic Conference champion Westminster by just 3.4 points to win the team title at the PAC Outdoor Championships, held Friday and Saturday at Westminster’s Memorial Field.
The title for the Wolverines is their first since 2009.
Grove City totaled 131 points, while Westminster finished with 127.6.
Waynesburg was third in the team standings with 104 points, followed by Thiel (80.6), Geneva (75, Saint Vincent (70), Thomas More (66.2), Bethany (58), and Washington & Jefferson (23).
Waynesburg junior Byrum Louco of Wexford won the PAC’s Most Valuable Performer honor, along with the event’s Track MVP award, for the second-straight year. Louco won the 400 (48.87) and 400 hurdles (54.17) and finished third in the 110 hurdles (15.96). He also was a member of Waynesburg’s first-place 1,6000 (3:24.19) and third-place 400 (43.32) relays and posted a fifth-place finish in the long jump (20-41/2).
Grove won its first PAC women’s title since 2005 by amassing 222 points. The Wolverines earned a 59-point margin of victory over runner-up Westminster . It is the largest margin of victory at the conference championships since 2005.
Washington & Jefferson finished third with 103 points, followed by Waynesburg (53) and Geneva in a tie for fourth, Bethany (48.5), Thomas More (37.5), Thiel (34), Saint Vincent (15) and Chatham (10).
W&J senior Cheyenne Mangold and Westminster senior Haley Gabor were selected as Co-Track Athletes of the Year. Mangold finished first in the 400 (57.35), second in the 400 hurdles (1:06.50), third in the 200 (25.71), seventh in the 100 (12.91) and was member of W&J’s second-place 400- and 1,600-relay teams.
